Why
is music capable of healing?
Maybe at some time in our
lives, we have been able to feel how a musical piece can bring us a precious
memory and make us feel better, or maybe they have hummed our children some
tune to calm them or to sleep, or even in our moments of solitude, euphoria or
depression, a song has been our accomplice and companion. But far from this
somewhat subjective assessment, there is extensive scientific documentation and
well-conducted studies that support this new weapon in the treatment of diseases.
Music and breathing
Breathing is first and
foremost a rhythmic process. Humans the general owner is 25 to 35 breaths per
minute.
A low, deep and maintained
average helps to calm, control emotions, stimulate thinking and generate a
better metabolism of the body. On the contrary, rapid breathing can lead to
scattered thoughts, impulsive behaviours, mistakes and accidents. Thus,
high-level music, more than 60 "drinks" per minute, produces bad
effects, in the same way, that a messy diet produces poor health.
Music and blood pressure
The human heart is
particularly tuned to music, therefore the pulsations respond to all musical
variables such as frequency, time and volume.
In such a way that a fast
pace makes more cunning than express and a slow slowdown. For that reason, the
slow rate of creating less tension and stress, keeping the body calm and
resting for us. Music is because a natural tranquillizer, but also the opposite
is true: strong rates can energize us and activate us almost even physical
damage.
Music, tension and muscle
coordination
The tone and flexibility of
the muscular system are powerfully influenced by tone, sound and musical
vibration, as demonstrated by Professor Olav Skilie in Norway.
Music with frequencies
between 40 to 66 Hertz reduces muscle tension and relaxes children. Today this
effect is known as acoustic power vibrating therapy, great healing in the
processes of muscle aches.
Music and body temperature
High or loud music can raise
body temperature by several degrees while the smooth and rhythmic rate may
decrease.
Music and endorphins
Endorphins, the natural
sedatives of the brain, are nowadays one of the most studied substances by
modern biochemistry. The California Stamford Research Center found that the
euphoria experienced while the subjects of study and "listen to music;
Chemical sanctions", created by the joy and emotions produced by the
musical richness of certain pieces of movies, religious songs and quartets,
which produces anesthesia states for pain and improves the immune system. These
experiments also found that injections of naloxone, an endorphin blocking drug,
interrupted the calming sensation of listening to music.
Music and immune function
A study by The Michigan State
University reported that listening to 15 minutes of music increased levels of
interleukin 1 in the blood and 12.5% at 14 years. Interleukins are substances
that appear in the proper response of the immune system.

large number of scientific investigations that support the use of music therapy
with different types of people:

• Learning difficulties
• Behavioural problems
• Deep developmental
disorders (autistic)
• Children with mental
deficiency
• With difficulties in
socialization
• With low self-esteem
•
With chronic and/or degenerative medical disorders (cancer, heart disease, pain
problems, etc.)
For
people with:

Degenerative due to the age of the diseases (Alzheimer, among others)
• Drug dependence problems and substance abuse
•
Brain damage due to illness or trauma
•
Physical, due to degenerative diseases or disability accidents
•
Acute or chronic pain problems
•
People with terminal illnesses.
It
also serves to:
• To reduce stress through making and
listening to music
•
As support in the process of childbirth in women
• To increase creativity and the ability to
solve problems
•
To decrease anxiety
